How to Be a Good Participant in a Forum |

Intro: Forums and message boards have become extremely popular over the past years. I am sure everyone has met people in forums that they liked and disliked. Follow these steps to become a good participant in a forum and be liked by the majority of members.  Step 1: Sign up with your forum if you haven’t already. Once signed up, start reading through some old posts so you don’t start a new topic that has already been visited. If you find some older topics that interest you, post your thoughts.  Step 2: To be a good participant in a forum you must start building some rapport with other members and don’t be overly opinionated. On most forums, you can see how many posts every member has posted. If you only have posted a few times, most people will not take you seriously. Start building up the amount of posts you have by throwing in a thought here and there. Until you have a lot of posts, try sticking to the facts. Don’t let your emotions control what you are going to post. Try to agree a lot more often then you disagree.  Step 3: Try to post topics and replies which are consistent with the theme of the forum. You can usually determine a particular vibe that the forum has and then stick with that vibe.  Step 4: Don’t play devil’s advocate for fun. To be a good participant in a forum you must be sincere and constructive. Don’t criticize, complain, or condemn anyone.  Step 5: Don’t leave your profile or “about me” section blank. Always have some good information about yourself listed in your profile. Other members can connect with you more if they read your bio. Make sure you don’t give out too much personal info, in your profile or in a forum post, like your full name and address.  Step 6: Always provide links to relevant articles or websites in your forum posts, to help others become more informed or see your point of view better.  Tips: Good participants in forums don’t sign up to try and plug your new book or website. Build rapport with other members before recommending your book or website.  Be nice to people!  Don’t take others comments personally. If someone says something bad about don’t retaliate with a nasty comment. Two wrongs don’t make it right!  Warnings: Don’t share personal information. Identity theft is a major problem nowadays.
