How to Spend Your Groundhog Day

Intro: Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada. If the groundhog can see its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter and if it can’t then spring is on the way. Follow these suggestions on how to spend your Groundhog Day.

Step 1: Watch the news to witness if the groundhog sees his shadow or not. If you like the cold winters then this could be a happy day if it can see its shadow. If you are ready for spring, like me, then you hope it can’t see its shadow.

Step 2: Learn about the historical origins of Groundhog Day. Legend has it that groundhogs are very timid creatures. If they come out of their holes and see their shadows they will be so scared they will go back underground.

Step 3: If the groundhog sees his shadow then expect 6 more weeks of harsh winter. I would stay inside, drink some hot chocolate, and prepare yourself for a long wait for spring.

Step 4: If the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow then spring is on the way. In this case, you should go outside and play in the snow as much as you can because it will be gone soon. Once the snow has melted you will be happy you spent more time outside during our short winter.

Step 5: To spend your groundhog day, you should visit Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness firsthand the groundhog emerging from its burrow. It is a great event to take your children to, especially if you live in Pennsylvania.

Tips: Spend time with your children on Groundhog Day and explain to them the tradition of the groundhog predicting the arrival of spring.

Warnings: Don’t bet all of your money that the groundhog will be correct since it isn’t 100 percent accurate.
