Intro: Properly celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 by following these steps and suggestions.
Step 1: Spend time with your children making crafts. You can use thick frosting or glue to make a pretzel stick or graham cracker log cabin. You can also put pennies under a piece of paper and rub it with the side of the crayon to make penny rubbings of Lincoln.
Step 2: You can read Lincoln’s First Inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address.
Step 3: Visit Washington D.C. and the Lincoln Memorial. A federal bicentennial commission is planning events in Washington D.C., which will include rededication of the Lincoln Memorial, the opening of an interactive exhibit on Lincoln at the Library of Congress, and a redesign of the 2009 penny!
Step 4: Visit Ford’s Theatre where President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. This is a National Historic Site which also includes a museum on the lower level.
Step 5: You can also check out the Peterson House where President Lincoln was carried away to after being shot. Touring the house is free and only takes a few minutes.
Tips: Do some research and learn more about Lincoln. He helped change the face of America while he was President.
Warnings: Children may be frightened if you show them the place where he Lincoln was shot. This may be a lot for a young child to handle.
