How to Win Friends

Intro: Do you want to have more friends? Do you want to be the person everyone comes to for advice? Well follow these very simple steps to become more likeable and influential.

Step 1: Don’t criticize people, complain, or condemn anyone. Generally, people hate complainers but love to complain themselves. If you stop complaining, people will enjoy being around you more and you’ll win more friends. Don’t criticize people, especially someone you want to be friends win. Even if you think it is a joke or constructive criticism most people will be offended by it. Don’t condemn or judge anyone. Put yourself in their shoes to better understand their view point.

Step 2: Become genuinely interested in your friends and new people you meet. People are interested in others who are interested in them.

Step 3: To win friends, smile more often. You can always make a good impression by smiling every time you meet someone. When meeting someone extend your hand for a firm handshake and give them a smile.

Step 4: Use peoples names. A person’s name is the most important sound in the history of language. As soon as you meet a person start using their name. This will help you remember it and will instantly make you more of a personable person. If you want to win more friends you will have to remember all of their names.

Step 5: To win friends, become a good listener. The most commonly used word in a conversation is “I.” When speaking with another person encourage them to talk about themselves. Ask your friends and new acquaintances questions they will enjoy answering. Talk in with the other persons interests in mind and you’ll win a ton of friends.

Step 6: Try to make the other person feel important. Don’t put on an act or lie to them. Find something that you sincerely admire or appreciate about that person and let them know. Ask them questions and direct the conversation towards that topic. People love to listen to you talk about them and their accomplishments. Good friends make other friends feel important.

Tips: Be social! Talk to people while standing in line. You can’t win new friends unless you meet more people.

To win friends, invite people to hang out. Grabbing a drink after work can be a great way to strengthen a relationship.

Warnings: Don’t be fake or insincere. Always be sincere in your interest or genuine in your admiration. People will see right through insincerity and you won’t win friends very often.
